A CMR note is the one document that stops a truck. Most forwarders still keep it as a Word file that drifts out of alignment, or buy pre-printed pads and fill them in by hand at the loading bay. Paperless ships the standard consignment note as a fixed form - all 24 boxes, correct geometry, bilingual labels - so you upload the commercial invoice, let AI fill the boxes, check it and print four copies.
The point of a fixed form is that the interesting work happens to the data, never to the layout. The note itself is not editable - by construction.
Clone the CMR consignment note from the built-in template library. It arrives complete - every numbered box, the CMR Convention clause, the four copies - so there is nothing to lay out.
Choose EN/DE, EN/FR, EN/RU, LT/EN or PL/EN. Every box label and copy footer switches to that pair, printed as two lines. Set your logo and which copies you need at the same time.
Drop in the commercial invoice - PDF or a photo from the loading bay. AI reads it and fills the note's fields, copying values verbatim. Anything the document does not show is left blank rather than guessed.
Review the filled boxes and add what only you know: carrier reservations, ADR class, payment instructions. One-click clauses cover the wording most consignments need.
Produce the PDF in milliseconds and print your copies. Or skip the browser entirely and call the REST API from your TMS, with async jobs and signed webhooks for volume.
An official form is not a design problem. The value is in refusing to let anyone - including the AI - move a box.
| Funkcja | Word file / generic PDF builder | Paperless fixed form |
|---|---|---|
| Layout integrity | Boxes shift as content grows. Every long description risks a note that looks wrong at the border. | Box geometry is locked. A long goods description reflows inside its box; it cannot push box 11 off the sheet. |
| Bilingual issuing | A separate file per language pair, maintained by hand and quietly drifting apart. | One form, five language pairs. Switch the pair and every label and copy footer changes together. |
| Getting the data in | Re-type everything from the invoice, or copy-paste box by box. | Upload the commercial invoice; AI extracts the parties, goods rows and weights into the correct boxes. |
| AI safety | A general AI tool asked to 'tidy up' the form will happily rewrite legally fixed wording. | The assistant can change paper size, margins, type and colour, and pre-fill defaults - it is structurally unable to reword or move a box on an official form. |
| The four copies | Photocopied, or four near-identical files someone keeps in sync. | Generated as part of the document, each with its traditional colour header, individually toggleable. |
| Volume | One at a time, by hand, by whoever is at the desk. | CSV batch and a REST API with async jobs and signed webhooks - your TMS issues the note. |
This is stage 4 - generation - of the document workflow Zeroflowers builds for freight forwarders. You can use it on its own for free, and talk to us when you want the ingestion, validation and audit stages around it.
Five: EN/DE, EN/FR, EN/RU, LT/EN and PL/EN. A CMR note is issued bilingually, so both languages print side by side in every box label and in each copy's footer mark. You pick the pair once on the template and every note you generate uses it.
Yes - the standard consignment note with every numbered box, the CMR Convention clause across the top, the charges table and the sender, carrier and consignee signature blocks. It is built as a fixed form, meaning the box geometry is locked and cannot be edited, which is the whole point of an official document.
Yes. Upload the invoice as a PDF or a phone photo (up to 12MB) and AI extracts the data into the note's fields - sender, consignee, carrier, goods rows, gross weights, values. It copies values verbatim and leaves a box blank when the source document does not show it, because a blank box is always better than a wrong one. You review before generating.
No, and it is worth being precise about it. Paperless produces the standard CMR consignment note as a print-ready PDF - the paper document your driver carries and your consignee signs. It is not an implementation of the e-CMR data-exchange protocol, so if you need certified digital handover between carrier systems, this is not that. For the large majority of UK and EU road freight that still moves on a printed note, it is exactly that.
Yes - your logo prints top-right on every copy. You can also set paper size, margins, typography and the accent colour of the form's rules and labels (a CMR is traditionally red).
Yes. Authenticate with a bearer token, POST the shipment payload and get a PDF back. High volume can use async jobs, which return a job id immediately and fire an HMAC-signed webhook on completion, or CSV batch generation. Note that scan-to-fill is a dashboard feature rather than an API endpoint - API callers send structured data they already hold.
There is a free tier with no credit card, which is enough to issue notes and see whether the form matches how your office works. Paid plans raise the monthly document limit. If you want the surrounding workflow - inbox routing, invoice validation, an audit trail - that is a Zeroflowers build, and the free audit is the place to start.
When you use scan-to-fill, the document you upload is sent to our AI provider to extract its data and nothing more - it is not used to train anyone's model, and providers are configured for zero retention. Generated PDFs are stored against your own account. Hosting is in EU regions by default, we sign DPAs on request, and self-hosted Paperless is available if your data residency rules require it. If you would rather not send documents to a model at all, skip scan-to-fill and post structured data to the API instead - the CMR form works exactly the same way.
Yes, two ways. There is a free tier with no credit card if you want to poke at it yourself. Or send us a real CMR and the matching commercial invoice from one of your lanes and we will set it up in your language pair and show you the generated note on a call - that is usually faster than evaluating it cold, and there is nothing to sign.
Paperless is the generation engine; the Zeroflowers service is the workflow around it. Use the CMR generator on its own if you just need clean notes today. If the real pain is that documents arrive in a shared inbox and get routed by hand, see our freight forwarding document automation page - the generator is stage 4 of that build.
